Ukraine, the price of survival: From civilian aircraft to attack drones

OffGuardian

by Tina Schivatcheva

Is the end of an industry also the end of an era? The Ukrainian aviation conglomerate Antonov was more than an industry; it was a legend. The symbol of an era, Antonov has been Ukraine’s industrial national champion for 70 years, so the recent news that it now may be closed has been distressing for many. Most of the Ukrainians lament: “Antonov is Ukraine’s calling card. The aircraft conglomerate built the most powerful transport planes that beat all the world records. Losing it would be like cutting off an arm”.  Yet the news that Antonov could possibly be “saved” for the time being but will now be producing combat attack drones has also caused distress. At a recent press-conference (26.01.2016) the Ukrainian National Security and Defence Council’s (NSDC) Secretary Oleksandr Turchynov announced that the drones “will be tested in the complex combat conditions of the conflict…

Right Sector Sets Up New Organisation in Estonia

TheDailyStalin

In Estonia a branch of the Neo-Fascist organisation Right Sector has been set up under the title of Right Sector Estonian Legion (Parem Sektor Eest Leegion). It has recently begun operation spread lies about fictional crimes of the Soviet regime as well as publishing revionist accounts of the victories of the Soviet Army.

According to the online publication Vecherka, the emergence of the Right Sector has already managed to cause discontent among some members of the very large Russians community  in Estonia. Included the fact that the page is often used derogatory in relation to the Russian term tiblad in Estonia.

Ants Punning leader of the movement Right Sector East Legion is also a board member of the Neo-Fascist MTÜ Toeta Ukrainat that raises funds for Neo-FAscist and Neo-Nazi anti-ussian groups in the Ukraine. However Punning noted that these organizations are not linked, “The Right Sector East Legion n…

What US Congress Researchers Reveal About Washington’s Designs on Syria

What's Left

Seeing the government in Damascus as too far to the left, Washington has been trying to orchestrate a regime change in Syria since at least 2003

February 9, 2016

By Stephen Gowans

Documents prepared by US Congress researchers as early as 2005 revealed that the US government was actively weighing regime change in Syria long before the Arab Spring uprisings of 2011, challenging the view that US support for the Syrian rebels is based on allegiance to a “democratic uprising” and showing that it is simply an extension of a long-standing policy of seeking to topple the government in Damascus. Indeed, the researchers made clear that the US government’s motivation to overthrow the government of Syrian president Bashar al-Assad is unrelated to democracy promotion in the Middle East. In point of fact, they noted that Washington’s preference is for secular dictatorships (Egypt) and monarchies (Jordan and Saudi Arabia.) [1] The…

As Yemen Bleeds UK Arms Profits Bury Human Rights

57259

It is more than possible to speculate why Prime Minister David Cameron has declared it his mission to scrap the Human Rights Act – which is incorporated into the European Convention on Human Rights – it appears he simply does not believe in human rights.

“Out of the mirror they stare,

Imperialism’s face

And the international wrong.”

(W.H. Auden, 1907-1973.)

For example, the fact that Saudi Arabia executed – including beheadings – forty seven people in one day last month, displaying their bodies from gibbets, failed to deter him from having British military experts to work with their Saudi counterparts, advising on which targets – and which people, it seems – to bomb in Yemen. Parliament has not been consulted, thus, without a chance to debate and vote, democracy too has been suspended

SATTER’S HALLUCINATIONS: Next New Low in American Rusology and Journalism

Russian & Eurasian Politics

photo Moscow Oct 93

by Gordon M. Hahn

On January 21st  the Wall Street Journal’s editors allowed on its editorial pages an opinion piece with one of the most glaring distortions of post-Soviet Russian history and politics ever produced by contemporary American ‘rusology.’ David Satter issued forth yet another of his caricatures of analysis in an exegesis from which he hoped readers would take away: ‘eternally totalitarian, imperialistic, and murderous Russia.’ The only murder here, however, was Satter’s murder of truth and the historical record. In addition to an uniformed analysis of the complicated and unresolved Litvinenko case as well as Russian politics under President Vladimir Putin, he issued forth both a full-fledged perversion of politics under Russia’s first post-Soviet president Boris N. Yeltsin and a complete inversion of the history of October 1993.

Satter wrote:

The first unexamined episode was the massacre at the Ostankino television tower in 1993, in the…

The Wall Will Fall

21st January 2016

By Vanessa Beeley

“They [the media] are news-as-entertainment professionals – packaging glossy corporate content for maximum distribution and big bucks. The goal is not objective reportage. Their targets are quantifiable and highlighted in a business plan somewhere. Success is based on a simple formula: stay within parameters “understandable” to a wide audience that devours sound bites and familiar storylines on the hour, every hour. Like trained seals whose every desire, instinct and buying pattern has been measured by corporate media’s marketing department for the consumption of its advertisers, the audience demands satisfaction – and western media delivers it.” ~ Sharmine Narwani

THE BBC BAMBOOZLE

The Madaya media circus lumbers on regardless of the multitude of proven anomalies and outright deceit of the mainstream narrative.  Deaf to either public opinion or investigation, institutions like the BBC consider they are above accountability to those who pay for their existence, the…

Patriotism is enough

IRRUSSIANALITY

As regular readers will have divined, I have a particular interest in the ideological underpinnings of the modern Russian state and its leaders, including President Vladimir Putin. Western analysts often mistakenly describe the people now governing Russia as nostalgic for the Soviet Union, an idea which Putin’s recent statements about Lenin should surely discredit. But if it’s easy enough to say what Putin is not, ideologically speaking, it is much harder to say what he is. Judging by a comment he made on Wednesday, the man himself might tell me that I am wasting my time trying to work it out.  At a meeting of the Leaders’ Club business association, Putin responded to a remark that Russia needs some unifying ‘national idea’ in the following way:

We do not have and cannot have any unifying idea other than patriotism. … You said that public servants and business and all citizens in…
